Ekuba Initiative

Ekuba Initiative is the outreach arm of The BAME Woman in Law.

The BAME Woman in Law is a UK-registered charity that supports women from minority ethnic backgrounds to access, navigate, and thrive in the legal profession.

While our work has mainly focused on women pursuing legal careers, Ekuba Initiative was created to extend this mission by supporting younger girls in underserved communities.

Our Mission
Ekuba Initiative supports girls in underserved communities by helping them access education, resources, and opportunities.

We focus on girls aged 9 to 18 and support them during an important stage of their lives.

We believe every girl deserves the chance to learn, grow, and reach her full potential, and we are committed to making this possible in the communities we serve.

Why This Matters
In many underserved communities, girls face challenges that can affect their education and future opportunities. These challenges may include limited access to books and learning materials, social and cultural pressures, and a lack of exposure to opportunities and support.
Through our work, we aim to:
  • Encourage a love for learning
  • Build confidence and self-belief
  • Expose girls to new opportunities and possibilities
  • Support mental health and emotional wellbeing
  • Improve long-term educational outcomes
Our work supports the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, especially SDG 4 (Quality Education) and SDG 5 (Gender Equality).

What We Do
We run four main programmes under Ekuba Initiative:
  • Ekuba Book Drive - We visit schools in underserved communities and give every girl aged 9 to 18 an Ekuba Kit. Each kit includes a reading book, a journal, a pen, and a folder to help girls learn, write, and stay organised. We believe giving girls the right learning tools can encourage a love for learning and help them keep aiming higher.

  • Ekuba School Talks - We visit schools and have open and honest conversations with girls about life. We talk about mental health, confidence, education, career opportunities, and more. It is not a lecture, it is a conversation and those conversations stay with them.

  • Ekuba School Club - Within our partner schools, we set up Ekuba Clubs for girls aged 9 to 18. Through monthly meetings, mentorship, and activities, we help girls build confidence, discover their strengths, and support one another.

  • Ekuba Scholarship - Each year, Ekuba Initiative awards scholarships to two outstanding students from our partner schools, one at Junior High School level and one at Senior High School level. Both students receive full tuition support through to completing their first university degree. We invest in girls not only for today, but for the future they are capable of building.
