BLACK HISTORY MONTH: CELEBRATING BLACK EXCELLENCE
The annals of our history testify of heroes whose contributions have forever changed the fabric of our society. Yet, historically, the contributions of black change-makers, innovators, leaders, lawyers, and advocates of both our time and ages past have often remained overlooked, undervalued, or simply unknown.
The month of October marks Black History Month in the UK, a period where we intentionally journey through the corridors of history to shine a spotlight on the stories of people from black communities. In doing so, we remember that despite the odds, they have become beacons of hope who have paved the way for generations to come, changing our world for good.
There are many we can look to within the canon of black history. However, The BAME Woman in Law chooses to honour one remarkable dignitary who epitomises the cultural epithet “Black Excellence”, our founder and visionary, Hilda Kwoffie.
Hilda’s StoryHilda’s inspirational story began at the tender age of 19, when she relocated 3,190 miles away from her home in Ghana to the UK, driven by her deeply embedded passion for law and justice. In 2024, she became the first lawyer in her family; one of many milestones she would go on to achieve.
Today, she has a remarkable repertoire of accomplishments: a Mental Health Law Solicitor, award-winning mentor, and the visionary behind The BAME Woman in Law.
A forward-thinking humanitarian, Hilda is deeply committed to creating change. She is a contributing author to Beyond Bias: Unleashing the Potential of Women in Law, where, in her chapter titled “Beyond the Buzzwords: Practical Pathways to Racial Equity and Representation in the Legal Profession,” she explores actionable strategies for building a more equitable and representative legal sector.
Her unwavering commitment to advocating for women’s and girls’ rights is evident in every facet of her work.
Over 100 young women and aspiring legal professionals have benefited from the mentoring and one-to-one support offered through The BAME Woman in Law. Her efforts were further recognised at the 2025 Women and Diversity in Law Awards, where she was named Mentor of the Year.
Hilda’s impact extends beyond mentoring women and girls in law. She also sits on the Steering Committee for Lawyers Against Poverty’s Refugee Rights Group, joining a collective of professionals united by a mission to challenge the grave ills of global poverty.
Her LegacyHilda’s influence continues to be a formidable force within the legal field and beyond. She is a much-needed voice championing reform; a woman whose story marks the genesis of a powerful legacy that is still unfolding before us.
A beautiful reminder to us all that…
Not all heroes wear capes.
